Mangalore, Sep 12, 2011: Kasargod Chinna, the actor and director, took over as the president of the Karnataka Sahithya Academy for a 3-year term at the academy office behind MCC today.

Mayor Praveen Anchan inaugurated the event and congratulated the new president.

In his address, President Kasargod Chinna spoke in praise of the Konkani language and assured everybody that he will work for its welfare, adding that all the government benefits for Konkani-speaking communities should be utilized to the fullest.

Speaking on the occasion, Mandd Sobhann Gurkar Eric Ozerio said that Chinna has the power to sort out problems of any magnitude, adding that his sincerity has earned him a lot of popularity. He also offered the use of the auditorium of Kalaangan free of charge for academy-organized Konkani activities.

Narayan Kharvi, the former president, said that Chinna has always supported the academy, owing to which he obtained the position of its president. While admitting that Kasargod is not part of Karnataka, he said that Konkani-speaking people of Kasargod are very much our own.

Formally handing over the post to Chinna, Mr. Kharvi felicitated him with a bouquet and a shawl.

Fr. Francis Rodrigues of Rakknno, Roy Castelino, Raghunath Shet, Vasanthi R. Nayak, Geetha C. Kini, and many others were also present.
