Mangaluru, Feb 4, 2017: Coast Guard in Karnataka, along with various other organisations, organised coastal clean-up drive in various parts of coastal Karnataka to raise awareness about Swachh Bharat and Swachh Sagar Abhiyan.

The cleanup drive was conducted at Panambur beach, Malpe Beach and Kodibag beach at Karwar on Saturday, Feb 4, 2017.

The cleanliness drive was attended by approximately 400 volunteers including students from various education institutes, voluntary organizations, Municipal Corporation at Mangaluru, Malpe & Karwar, Coastal Security Police etc. Local people from the nearby coastal areas and villagers also participated. The enthusiasm for the cleanliness drive was clearly evident. Young students were amongst most excited participants, who were taking pride in cleaning the coastal areas.

The heterogeneous group became a well-knit team and made the cleanliness drive successful. With the efforts of everybody 215 Kgs of debris and waste were collected from Mangaluru and 205 Kg debris from beaches at Karwar. The garbage merely consists of plastics, polythene bags, wrappers and other non-biodegradable waste.

Deputy Inspector General KR Suresh TM, the Commander Coast Guard Karnataka who was amongst the volunteers undertaking the noble cause of cleanliness stated, “Swachh Bharat and Swachh Sagara Abhiyan are the flagship programme of the Government of India. Each and everyone should participate voluntarily keeping the surroundings neat and clean so that our coastal area and the Nation can become litter-free. This will also lead to the formidable steps to contain the global warming and increase the environmental protection.”
