Karkala, Feb 17, 2015: A Bison that had accidentally fallen into a well in Majalakody Belman Itameri village in the taluk was rescued by the forest officials with the help of the locals on February 15, Monday.
It is suspected that the animal might have fallen into the well the previous night. It was only the next morning when Xavier Rebello in whose land the well is located had visited his plantation that he came to know of the Bison inside the well.
Soon the Forest officials were informed and they rushed to the spot and with the help of a JCB cleared the mud close by the well to help the animal scale the wall of the well.
The animal was thus rescued but was found limping and even the efforts made by the locals to release it into the nearby forest proved futile.
Finally a veterinarian was summoned and the injured leg was treated after removing a piece of cable which had pierced into the leg. The animal was later released to the forest near Bola village.
Prakash, Range forest Officer led the rescue operation.
