Udupi, Mar 8, 2017: Veteran politician and former MP of Udupi Chikkamagaluru constituency K Jayaprakash Hegde has formally joined the BJP at the party office in Bengaluru on March 8, Wednesday. MLA from Karkala and Chief Whip of Opposition Sunil Kumar welcomed Hegde into the party fold in the presence of senior leaders including State BJP Chief BS Yeddyurappa and former minister R Ashok.
The development comes when the elections to the State Assembly are just a year away. Hegde who was first associated with the Janata Dal had later joined the Congress in 2008.
He had won the by-elections from Udupi-Chikkamagaluru constituency in 2012. However in the 2014 elections he lost to Shobha Karandlaje of the BJP. Hegde had contested the MLC elections in 2015 as an independent after the Congress denied him a ticket . Subsequently he was expelled from the party.
Speculations are now rife if Hegde would get a BJP ticket to contest from Udupi.
