Continuing his address, he voiced his opinions that India, as a democratic country, must make it mandatory for people to have educational qualification to contest in the elections and pointed out that only 80 percent of the Indian popular is literate.

Criticizing the indiscipline in Parliament, he said that representatives discuss issues in a bizarre manner and then stage agitation for several days and never go home even when assembly is adjourned, but choose to eat and sleep there as per their convenience. Regretting that the role of citizens does not seem to matter in the democratic setup, he recalled a student’s question regarding the failure of bills passed by the government. He said that only bills related to the general public remain stagnant while bills related to politicians’ travel allowance, dearness allowance, and others are passed in no time. He also admitted that his understanding of democracy when he was studying law was totally different to his understanding of it after joining the Lokayukta.

Urging people to vote in large numbers, he said that voting should be made mandatory and opined that politicians serve the people by representing them and so they must not commercialize their positions. He concluded by assuring his listeners that the Karnataka Lokayukta is working hand to ensure good governance and thereby help the general public.

Karnataka Bank Managing Director P. Jayaram Bhat delivered the introductory address and said that the bank is growing steadily. Speaking about the bank’s achievements, he said that the bank made a turnover of Rs. 42,000 crore as on date and aims to reach a target of Rs. 45,000 crore at the end of this fiscal year. He also said that the bank has bagged the Best Bank Award for using information technology in 2010.

Karnataka Bank Chairman Ananthakrishna presided over the occasion.
