Mangalore, March 24: H. D. Kumaraswamy, the former chief minister of Karnataka, took special interest in the medical treatment of a poor woman and paid all her pending medical bills.

Vijayalakshmi (32) was unable to move after a fall in the forest when she was collecting firewood. Thanks to the generosity of Kumaraswamy, she is now discharged from AJ Hospital after taking treatment there for several months. First admitted to AJ Hospital in November 2010, she humbly expressed her gratitude to her benefactor by stating that she was able to receive this expensive medical treatment because of him and that he had brought the smiles back on the face of her children.

Kumaraswamy learned about the plight of this poor woman and her children through a TV9 report. Vijayalakshmi of Kalmadka was the lone bread winner of the family as her husband had died 4 years back. She took care of her kids by rolling beedies. A fall in the forest, however, left her confined to her bed. She was first admitted in K. S. Hegde Hospital, Deralakatte and failed to respond to the treatment. She also could not afford the expensive tests. She went back home and tried Ayurveda without success. She also tried treatment at a Kasargod-based hospital, but to no avail.

Kumaraswamy, who came to know about the condition of Vijayalakshmi through TV9, contacted her and asked her to get admitted into AJ Hospital. He personally spoke to the medical team at AJ Hospital and urged the doctors to do their best. He also paid Rs. 50,000 toward her hospital bills and requested DC Subodh Yadava to provide assistance of Rs. 40,000.

When he enquired about the condition of her two children, he learned that while Vijetha was a fits patient and Vidhatha was blind. Kumaraswamy then created a fixed deposit of Rs. 2 lakh to meet their education expenses. The children had stopped going to school and had begun rolling beedies to meet expenses after their mother became bed-ridden.

H. D. Kumaraswamy not only bore the medical expenses of this poor woman, but is also determined to bear the medical expenses of her two children, who suffer from various medical problems. He has also expressed his gratitude to AJ Hospital.

M. B. Sadashiva, the district president of the JD(S), and JD(S) leaders such as Haider Parthipady, Abubakker Natekal, D. M. Aslam, Francis Noronha, and others were present.
