Mangaluru, Sep 19, 2018 : MLC Ivan D’Souza has threatened to launch a hunger strike in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office if the Union Government went ahead with its plans to merge Vijaya Bank with two other banks.
Speaking to reporters here on September 19, Wednesday, he said Vijaya Bank was a symbol of the honour of Dakshina Kannada district and demanded that the Union Finance Ministry should drop its proposal to merge Vijaya Bank with Bank of Baroda and Dena Bank.
The intention behind merger of banks is to help the corporate sector, he alleged. He said Vijaya Bank which has a total of 2129 branches has 79 branches in Dakshina Kannada district and 63 in Udupi district. The bank has 583 branches in the state and 60% of its branches are in rural areas. The district has a close bonding with this bank which was founded here, he said.
On the reported moves made by the BJP to topple the JD(S)- Congress coalition government in the state, Ivan said no amount of conspiracy by the BJP can shake the government.
