She said the government has no plans to end the scheme. The scheme, targeted at pregnant women hailing from below poverty line families, became successful in all but Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Kodagu and Ramanagaram districts, she said. Union government provides Rs. 1,800 crore a year for this scheme, she added.

Reasoning out the government’s decision not to provide cash to beneficiaries, Minister Jayamala said other members of the family may utilise the cash for different purposes. Hence, the government decided to provide food comprising egg, milk, and sprouted cereals. There are problems like distance to the nearest anganwadi centre or some other technical reasons. These would be addressed, the Minister said.

Stating that she did not ask for anything, Minister Jaimala noted that she was happy to be designated as Udupi in charge since she hails from the coast. She would deliver good work and strive hard to take government schemes to people, she said.

The Minister visited Udupi Krishna Mutt/Temple and met Paryaya Swami, Vidyadheesha Tirtha Swami of Palimar Mutt. The Minister also interacted with Congress workers at the district office where she was felicitated.
