Udupi, June 29, 2018: Countless houses were damaged and many fields and low-lying areas were flooded due to rain accompanied by strong winds in Udupi district as on June 28, Thursday.

Two persons and a cow were injured in lightning strikes on June 27, Wednesday.

According to the information provided by the Control Room at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office here, Kamala and her daughter were injured when lightning struck them at their house at Haklady village in Kundapur taluk. They later received treatment at the Primary Health Centre.

A cow shed was struck by lightning at Nujady village in the same taluk. The loss was estimated at Rs. 15,000. The house of Guruva Poojary was partially damaged when it was struck by lightning in Haklady village. The loss was estimated at Rs. 15,000.

A house and a compound wall belonging to Jalajamma was damaged in lightning strike in the same village, and the loss was estimated at Rs. 20,000. A house belonging to Saraswati Poojarti was partially damaged at Moodutonse village in Udupi taluk due to rain and the loss was estimated at Rs. 40,000, while the house of Prema was partially damaged in Udyavar and the loss was estimated at Rs. 50,000.

A house belonging to Muralidhar Mogaveera was damaged due to rain accompanied by gusty winds at Hosadu village and the loss was estimated at Rs. 30,000. A house belonging to Rama Naik was partially damaged at Halady village and the loss was put at Rs. 15,000.

A wall of a house belonging to Chandu Poojary gave way at Hemmady village and the damage was estimated at Rs. 25,000. A wall of a house collapsed at Koteshwar village and the loss was put at Rs. 50,000. A house belonging to Ravindra was damaged at Nadsal in Kaup taluk and the loss was estimated at Rs. 1 lakh.

Low-lying areas were flooded in some areas in Kundapur and Byndoor taluks. Low-lying areas were inundated at Padukone, Marvanthe and Navunda villages. Some houses in low-lying areas at Salbuda. Water also entered the Sri Brahmi Durgaparmeshwari Temple at Kamalashile village.

Paddy fields and coconut and arecanut plantations in Padukone, Badakere, Maravanthe Kuru, Sulse, Padu Kudru were flooded. B.M. Sukumar Shetty, Byndoor MLA, visited some flooded areas on a boat.

Udupi received a rainfall of 54.5 mm, while Kundapur and Karkala received 109.4 mm and 120 mm of rainfall respectively in the last 24 hours till 8.30 a.m. on Thursday, June 28.
