Illegal IPL betting on the rise – Manipal police arrest 4 students

Udupi, May 9, 2012 : The Manipal police have arrested 4 students for running an illegal IPL betting outfit in an apartment called High Point in Saralebettu Grama. They have also confiscated a television set, a laptop, mobile phones, and cash, which were used in illegal betting activities on the night of Monday.


ipl 1The arrested are Nishanth Kumar (20), Abhinav Anand (19), Sachin Mahapatra (20), and Gaurav Kumar (19), all from North India. They were accepting bets on the Delhi Daredevils vs. Kolkata Knight Riders match of IPL in room number 102 at High Point.

A police team comprising DySP Dr. Prabhudeva B. Mane and Inspector Sadananda Thippannavar raided the place and arrested the four.

This is the fourth case of illegal betting reported from Udupi. The other three were reported from Brahmavara and Kundapura. Most of those arrested for illegal betting in all these cases were students under the age of 20.

While the nation is gripped with IPL cricket fever, heavy illegal betting is taking place in Udupi. Five days back, 5 young men involved in illegal betting were caught.

The Brahmavar police arrested Sachin (19) of Kadoor and Santhosh (19) of Neelavara for involvement in illegal betting activities near Gandhi Maidan. SI Girish Kumar has confiscated Rs. 2,600 from each teenager.

Punith (25) of Pandeshwar was arrested by the Brahmavar police when he was illegally accepting bets on the IPL from the public. The police have seized Rs. 5,700 and two mobile phones from him.
