Mangalore, August 25, 2011: International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) of London presented its IHEU Award 2011 to Prof. Narendra Nayak for distinguished services to humanism at Oslo on the 16th August, 2011.

International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) gives awards for outstanding service to Humanism at the World Humanist Congress, held every three years. The Distinguished Service to Humanism Award recognizes exceptional contributions to the work of IHEU. This year, the Award was given to three individuals: Professor Nayendra Nayak, David Pollock, and V.B. Rawat. The International Humanist Award recognizes individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to advancing Humanist principles in society. Past winners include Andrei Sakharov, Alexander Dubcek, Amartya Sen and Philip Pullman. This year the Award was given to two people: Sophie in’t Veld, MEP, and Professor P Z Myers.

 

Narendra Nayak

 

Prof. Narendra Nayak, the well-known rationalist is the President of the Federation of Rationalists Association of India(FIRA) and founder of Dakshina Kannada Rationalist Association and has been its Secretary since 1976.

A post-graduate in medical bio-chemistry, Prof Nayak worked as an Assistant Professor of Biochemistry at the Centre for Basic Sciences, KMC, Mangalore till November 2006 when he quit the job to fully involve himself in the rationalist movement. Deeply influenced by his ideological Guru, the Late Premananda, he founded the the DK Rationalist Association  which has been playing a very crucial role in exposing the secret behind miracles and supernatural phenomenon since the past three decades. The FIRA which he is presently heading, is an apex body of more than 65 atheist, rationalist and Humanist groups in India. 

His campaign is not just restricted to the district but is spread over various parts of the nation as well as the world. He has even been featured in many television programs in Discovery Channel, National Geographic and the BBC. He has published several articles on rationalism and books in Kannada about miracles and his research into paranormal phenomena.

His main objective is to promote scientific temperament while trying to rubbish claims of the existence of super-natural phenomenon and the miracles performed by god men and women in this country and he has even achieved significant success in his endeavor.
