Honorary rank of colonel commandant conferred on Prof. T. C. Shivashankara Murthy

Mangalore, July 21, 2011: Prof. T. C. Shivashankara Murthy, the vice chancellor of Mangalore University, received the honorary rank of Colonel Commandant, which was conferred on him by the director general of National Cadet Corps (NCC), Ministry of Defense at a solemn programme held on the campus of Mangalore University yesterday. 

 

This makes Prof. Murthy the third vice chancellor of Mangalore University to receive this honorary rank, the other two being Prof. K. M. Kaveriappa and B. Hanumaiah.

In his response, Prof. Murthy said that he will take up the responsibility of promoting NCC in all colleges affiliated to the Mangalore University. Speaking of the role played by the NCC, he said that NCC cadets were second in the line of defense during the Indo Pak war. He said that the cadets transported weapons to the front and helped the soldiers.

Stating that it is the need of the hour to motivate students to take up careers in the armed forces, the VC said that the NCC not only trains youth to be disciplined citizens, but also develops in them qualities of courage and leadership and the spirit of adventure. He also said that around 5000 colleges and 7000 schools all over India have NCC.

Speaking on the occasion, Dinesh P. Naikvada, the group commander colonel of NCC, said that the honorary rank just conferred on the VC will help him interact with NCC units, officers, and cadets in the university and to guide them to uphold NCC ideals.

Besides Prof. Murthy, six other VCs from all over India have received the honorary rank of colonel commandant this year. They are S. C. Sharma of Tumkur University, A. Jayakrishnana of University of Kerala, Mohammed Iqbal Ali of Satavahana University in Karimnagar, Govind Prasad Mishra of Madhya Pradesh Pashu Chikitsa Vigyan Viswavidyala in Jabalpur, K. Meena of Bharathidasan University in Trichy, and Naveen Mathur, the VC of Jai Naraian Vyas University in Jodhpur, who unfortunately expired a month back.
