Honorary awards were conferred on Abul Hasan Mohammed Maulavi, preacher and writer, and Ismaeel Ustad, a duff maestro, in recognition of their achievements in the field of Beary language and folk art. Krishna J Palemar, the district-in-charge minister, felicitated the award winners. The honorary awards comprised a purse of Rs 10,001, a certificate, and a souvenir.

Ahmed Noori, another prominent personality chosen for these awards, did not attend the programme because of ill health. The Beary Sahithya Academy decided to confer the award on him at his residence as soon as possible.

Prof Baragooru expressed his appreciation of the Beary Sahithya Academy, which was born just a year ago. Stressing on the importance of developing Beary language and culture, he warned that a federal system will not survive unless diversity is preserved. Urging the government to treat all languages, cultures, communities, and religions equally, he said that unjust policies and discrimination is an insult to federal democracy as upheld by the Indian constitution.

Abul Hassan Mohammed Maulavi declared in his speech that language must act as a bridge between humans, not as a barrier. Recalling his early days as a preacher, he said that he had incurred the wrath of members of his community for daring to deliver a sermon in Beary 35 years ago. He expressed his hopes that the Beary Sahithya Academy will play a major role in the development of the Beary community.

Krishna J Palemar said that the Beary community was peace loving “once upon a time.”

B Chandrahasa Rai, the registrar of Karnataka Beary Sahithya Academy, gave the welcome and introductory speech. M B Abdurrahman, the president of the Academy, presided over the meeting. P Mohammed, the member of the Academy, proposed the vote of thanks. Hamza Malar, the journalist and writer, compered the programme. MLA U T Khader and Prof B M Ichlangod were also present.
