Higher education department support for ’Yoga Day’

Mangaluru, June 13, 2015:   In an informal chat with media at the  inaugural function of the Konkani Study Chair of Mangalore University on June 12 at University College, Deshpande said a decision to celebrate the Higher Education Council that comprises of vice-chancellors of all state universities and others have decided to observe the Day in all universities, colleges and educational institutions in Karnataka. 

The Karnataka State Higher Education Council had earlier  decided to celebrate the day, department will ensure that the event is held in a co-ordinated fashion, noted minister for higher education and tourism RV Deshpande. The department has taken a decision to involve all institutions of higher education, he noted.

Deshpande said that participation will be voluntary, adding there will be no compulsion for anyone to do so. The other problem for the department to observe the event meaningfully, Deshpande noted is the fact that many of the colleges are closed and that the day falls on a Sunday. But,  we have given a call to the vice-chancellors and all principals to involve all concerned and observe the event in a voluntary fashion  he stated.

Prodded if the state is trying to leverage the tourism potential inherent in yoga by way of offering special packages to tourists interested in learning yoga in institutes of repute that dot the state, Deshpande was non-committal. The government/department  are trying to see that there is a function for International Yoga Day  and that is that.
