Heavy rains claim one life in Bantwal

Bantwal, Aug 9, 2012 : Heavy rains continued lashing against the twin districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada even on August 8, Wednesday. The rains have also claimed a life in Bantwal.

 

The deceased is Sesappa Baira (52), who fell into an overflowing stream in Padaaru at Vitlapadnoor in Bantwal on the night of Tuesday.

During the last 24 hours, Mangalore received the highest rainfall of 64.3mm, followed by Belthangady (54.6mm), Sullia (53.2mm), Bantwal (48mm), Moodubidri (47.2mm), Puttur (41.6mm), and Kadaba (32.4mm).

The level of water in River Nethravathi has gone down from 8.3m on Tuesday to 5.8m on Wednesday noon, but continued rising as the rains intensified on Wednesday evening. The local people were observed collecting logs and coconuts floating down the river in traditional boats.

Udupi has recorded an average rainfall of 94.26mm during the last 24 hours. The floods are under control and the rivers are flowing below danger level. Karkala recorded the highest rainfall of 132.4mm, while Udupi received 90.6mm and Kundapur received 59.8mm.

A road in Kabbinale, Karkala has been blocked because of a landslide and the loss is estimated to be Rs. 15 lakh. Besides, the rains also destroyed a few houses in Udupi.

According to Jagannath Rao, tahsildar for Karkala, the situation is under control and measures have been taken to deal with emergencies. According to Abhijin, tahslidar for Udupi, Badayermal has reported some sea erosion and engineers were sent to the village to consider possibilities of dumping boulders to prevent further sea erosion in the region. Since water was released from Chakra Dam, water flooded into Kattinadi and entered several houses. The families had to be moved to Devarabalu School.
