Manipal, Nov 12, 2014: The hearing in the Manipal gang rape case has been adjourned by the District and Sessions Court till December 3 consequent upon the Special Leave Petition filed by the State Government in the Supreme Court  challenging the High Court order to hear  the remaining 16 witnesses in the case.

The District and Sessions Court had earlier in its ruling had said that the hearing of the remaining 16 witnesses out of the total 108 witnesses in the case was not necessary. But the accused had moved the High Court which ordered hearing of the 16 witnesses. Following this the State Government had filed a Special Leave Petition in the Supreme Court.

The hearing in the District and Sessions Court can now be held only after the Supreme Court ruling, says T.S. Jituri, Public Prosecutor.

The incident had taken place on the night of June 20, 2013 when three  men had abducted a Kerala based medical student of Manipal University and had taken her to an isolated location where she was gang raped.

The three main suspects Yogish Poojary, Hariprasad Poojary and Anand were arrested a week later under dramatic circumstances. Even  Balachandra, the brother of Yogish and Harindra, brother of another accused Hariprasad were arrested on the charges of trying to destroy  evidences. The latter two  are now out on bail.
