Shettar also said that state government has plans to train all the GP members, especially because many of them have been elected for the first time. Explaining the plan further, Shettar said that 60 – 70 percent of the 80,159 candidates who had contested for the GP elections in the state are new to the GP, owing to which they require training as per the Abdul Nazir Sab State Institute of Rural Development Scheme.

All GP presidents and vice presidents will be trained separately in July with the purpose of educating them about administration methods and rules of the Panchayat Raj Act, said Shettar, adding that special training will be provided to all the GP members next October with the help of satellite conferences and resource persons.

Shettar called upon the GP members to conduct Gram Sabhas in time, explaining that new schemes, plans, and projects for the development of the villages can be implemented only through efficiently conducted Gram Sabhas.

In response to a query regarding the lack of grants for GPs, the minister said that most of the problems of the villages can be solved by effectively utilizing current grants, adding that the purpose of appointing ombudsman in every district is to monitor the effective utilization of funds.

The minister brushed aside Congress claims that they have gained prominence in the GP elections and confirmed that the percentage of candidates supported by the BJP has crossed 60.

District-in-charge Minister Krishna J. Palemar, Coastal Development Authority chairman Nagaraj Shetty, Mayor Rajani Dugganna, and BJP District President Padmanabha Kottari were present during the press conference.
