Mangalore, August 15, 2012: District-in-charge Minister C. T. Ravi declared that the BJP-led state government has launched a number of development programs in DK and will continue to do so for the rest of its term. The minister was addressing the gathering on the occasion of the 66th Independence Day celebrations on Nehru Maidan on August 15, Wednesday.

Earlier, Mr. C. T. Ravi hoisted the national flag in the presence of prominent personalities and inspected the guard of honor in a vehicle. A total of 18 teams representing the reserve police, the district armed reserve (DAR) police, civil police, traffic police, Coast Guard, Home Guards, Scouts and Guides, NCC Naval Senior, NCC Naval Junior, NCC Army Senior, NCC Army Junior, NCC Air Wing Senior, NCC Air Wing Junior, Bharat Seva Dal Boys and Girls, Road Safety Patrol Boys and Girls, and Police Band took part in the Independence Day parade.

In his address, the minister stated that a state can be said to be fully developed only when all the people get basic facilities. So far, the state government has provided good roads, excellent transport facilities, fast Internet facilities, fuel, drinking water, compulsory education, job opportunities, market facilities for farmers, and others, he said, assuring the audience that the state government will implement all proposed welfare and development schemes at the earliest possible.

Giving a report of development projects undertaken in DK during the last four years, the district-in-charge minister said that over Rs. 991.57 crore was spent on developing the district. He said that the state has provided Rs. 500 per month for 22,693 beneficiaries under the Sandhya Suraksha Scheme. Further he said that Rs. 24.5 crore has been sanctioned for the construction of a 3D planetarium in Pilikula and tenders for the Rs. 15 crore worth Ranga Mandir have been called to develop DK as a tourist district.

The highlight of the 66th Independence Day celebrations was a model helicopter designed by Ratnakar Naik of Indian Aero Model Society, which showed flowers on the national flag from the air.

The Road Safety Patrol Boys and the NCC Air Wing Junior Team shared the first prize for the Independence Day parade while the NCC Navy Junior team bagged the second prize.

DC N. S. Channappa Gowda, Mangalore Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, SP Abhishek Goyal, Deputy Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly N. Yogish Bhat, and many others took part in the celebrations.

In honor of the 66th Independence Day, the DK Sports Promoters organized the Five Over Independence Cup Cricket, in which the Mangalore Eleven Team, Press Eleven Team, Deputy Commissioner Eleven Team, Superintendent of Police Eleven Team, and Mayor Eleven Team took part.
