Goonda Act invoked against notorious criminals Akashbhavan Sharan, Chappe Raheem

Mangaluru, Feb 11, 2017 :  Goonda Act has been invoked  by the city police against two notorious criminals namely Rohidas alias Akashbhavan Sharan alias Sharan (32), a resident of Anandnagar in Akash Bhavan, and Raheem alias Chappe Tanni Raheem (37), a resident of Kasba Bengre.

Informing this to reporters here on February 11, Saturday, City Police Commissioner M Chandra Shekhar said  Akashbhavan Sharan who is an aide of underworld element Vicky Shetty faced as many as 17  grave charges including four murder, a murder attempt, a rape case and   robbery attempt cases.

The Commissioner said Goonda Act has been invoked against Sharan as he was found to be carrying out his criminal activities despite the several cases against him in various stages of hearing in the court. Sharan has been arrested on February 10, Friday and lodged in the District Prison at Vijayapura.

The Commissioner said Sharan was the main accused in the  murder cases of Kumar, Ramakrishna Bhat and Prashanth Shetty and was once earlier took booked under Goonda Act.

On the other hand, Raheem was a drug peddler who targeted students, the Commissioner informed and added that he was facing eight cases and was acquitted in two of the cases. He said the Department found that he was continuing with his illegal activity despite the several cases against him and has  been arrested on Friday and lodged in Shivamogga District Prison.

The Commissioner informed that  in 2017, so far   five drug peddlers and 15 drug addicts have been booked in 20 cases. As far as previous year was concerned a total of 239 drugs cases have been registered  including 57 cases against drug peddlers and 182 cases against drug addicts, the Commissioner stated.

The drug addicts who were booked have been shifted to de-addiction centres, he added.

The Commissioner informed that  so far this year the police have  seized 12.3 kg of ganja and 11.5 kg of  cocaine, while the seized quantity of ganja in 2016 was 109 kg while 40 kg of cocaine was seized. In 2015, the police seized 16.65 kg of ganja, the Commissioner informed.
