Mangalore, April 8: Mangalore police arrested 11 people, allegedly belonging to the Campus Front of India (CFI), for violating the prohibitory orders under Section 144 imposed by the district administration to ensure peace and order during the SSLC examinations, on April 7, Wednesday.

Ganapathy High School has been attracting media attention from the past 3 days because Muslim girls, who were answering their SSLC examinations, were asked to remove their burkha. One of the Muslim girl students was asked to remove her burkha once again although the authorities of Ganapathy High School assured that it would not be done. She reported the matter to her parents, who called up the DDPI and even visited the examination centre to discuss the issue with the authorities.

The DDPI, however, informed journalists that the girl was asked to remove her veil for purposes of verifying identity. However, the girl says that she was asked to remove the entire burkha. A boy, who was answering his exam in the same hall, also said that she was asked to remove the entire burkha and not just the veil.

The Chief Examination Inspector Ms Ashalatha has refused to make any comments regarding this issue.

Regarding the arrest of CFI activists, Ataullah Jokatte of Popular Front of India (PFI) said that the CFI activists had gone to the police station to lodge a complaint against the school authorities for treating Muslim girl students in this manner. Instead of taking action against the school authorities, the police arrested CFI activists and treated them badly. On April 1, Thursday, the day the SSLC examinations commenced, nobody asked the Muslim girl students to remove their burkhas; however, since Monday, they have been forced to remove their burkhas, and now CFI activists have been arrested. Ataullah called this “a well-planned conspiracy against the Muslim community.”
