Mangaluru, Dec 14, 2014: Prof. B.A. Viveka Rai, former vice chancellor of Hampi Kannada University has said that Tulu language has all the criteria to be included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
Participating in a discussion on “Inclusion of Tulu in Eighth Schedule of the Constitution” as part of the Vishwa Tuluvere Parba underway at the Sahyadri College at Adyar on December 13, Saturday, Prof. Rai even recalled that former union defence minister George Fernandes who hails from Mangaluru too had in the past tried to secure Tulu its due recognition.
Prof. Rai also stated that the Karnataka Government too should give official language status to Tulu and stressed the need for a survey of Tulu speaking people.
Continuing, he said inclusion of Tulu in Eighth Schedule of Constitution would go a long way in the development of the language as it would get adequate funds and can also be included in CBSE syllabus.
MLC Ivan D’Souza, K Chinnappa Gowda, Vamana Nandavar, Tulu Academy President Janaki Brahmavar also spoke.
Session on Kambala: There was even a session on Kambala wherein several Kambala organisers including K Gunapal Kadamba, Convenor of a Kambala Academy and Bhasker S Kotian, District Kambala Committee Chief said all measures would be taken to avoid cruelty to buffaloes taking part in the traditional sport of Kambala.
