Mangalore, Feb 25: A Bantwal Police team, led by Bantwal Circle Inspector K. Nanjunde Gowda, arrested 5 vehicle thieves on Feb 18, said SP Dr. A. Subrahmanyeshwar Rao at a press meet held in the mini conference hall of the SP’s office on Feb 25, Friday.

Revealing further details, the SP said that Moideen alias Unni alias PS (37), the son of Ummar of Varkady in Manjeshwar, and Haneef alias Eli Haneef (37), the son of late Badavakunni of KBS Jokatte in Baikampady, were caught red handed on Feb 18, 2011.

The police officers confiscated two motorbikes from them and interrogated them. The two revealed names of accomplices who were also involved in stealing vehicles from Kerala, Karnataka, and Maharashtra. The police used this information to arrest three more vehicle thieves—S. Ashraf (28), the son of Ramla of Kamblabettu in Bantwal; Sayyed Nihal alia Sayyed Irfan alias Irfan (40), the son of Rashed Saab of Shimoga; and Moideen Shareef alias RTO Moideen (42), the son of Mohammed Shareef of Cheppina Katte in Hassan.

The SP also said that the police have confiscated 14 four wheelers and 22 two wheelers from the accused, who were adept at creating fake documents, changing registration plates, and selling vehicles to respectable people such as doctors and lecturers. He also said that vehicles stolen two years ago are registered as KA 21.

He also said that Ashraf and Nihal pretend to be vehicle brokers and sell the stolen vehicles. Nihal has been booked on 25 counts of vehicle theft, said the SP and added that Nihal stole new vehicles by using duplicate keys and old vehicles by direct start.

The police have already recovered 14 heavy vehicles such as 3 lorries, 2 tippers, 1 Swift, 1 Innova, 1 Santro, 1 Maruthi 800, 2 Maruthi Omnis, 1 Indica, 2 Scropios, and 1 Qualis. Two more lorries, 1 Tavera, 1 Omni, and 1 Scorpio are yet to be found. These vehicles were recovered from Hubli, Bangalore, Mandya, Mysore, Javagali, Arasiker, Manjeshwar, and Bantwal.

The police  team comprised officers Vivekananda, MRM Tahshildar, Rakshith Kumar, ASI Kepu Gowda and Head Constables like Sanjeeva Purusha, Jnanshekhara, Kalaimar, Dinesh, Jayaram Rai, police constables Palnivelu, Vijay Kumar, Vasu NAIK, Raja, Prashanth, Jayakumar, Girish, Vishwanath, Jagannath Udaya Kumar, Umesh, Basavaraj, Darnappa, Sridhar, Sheshanna, Praveen, Madhu Prakash, Subhash Shenoy, Nagarajappa, Nagaraj Hegde, Udaya Naik, Sitaram, Mahesh, Shailendra, Rithesh (Computer Department), police drivers Vijayeshwaran, Vijay Gowda, Yajna Narayana, Mohan Poojary, Narayana Gowda under the leadership of Bantwal Circle Inspector K Nanjunde Gowda.

The team received an award of Rs. 10,000 in the presence of Puttur SP Rohini Katoch, who was also present during the press conference.
