Mangalore, Sept 1, 2011: As usual, Ganesha Chathurti celebrated in great fervour in many parts of Dakshina Kannada this year. In spite of the heavy rains, people could be seen shopping, greeting one another, visiting the temples, and attending public Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.

Colorful History

The practice of celebrating Ganesh Chathurti throughout the nation, which was originated by Bal Ganghadar Tilak, has now gained immense popularity. Although the festival was celebrated in a handful of places in North India during the late nineteenth century, it spread quickly and reached DK in the mid twentieth century. The first Ganesh Chathurti was celebrated in Sangha Niketan, which celebrated its 64th Ganeshotsav today.

Today, Udupi witnesses a total of 363 public Ganeshotsavas and DK witnesses 332 Ganeshotsavas. Although the practice of celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi began in Udupi much later than it began in DK, Udupi organizes more public Ganeshotsavas than DK. Even Kasargod organizes around 30 public Ganeshotsavas today.


Lucrative Day
Ganesh Chaturth is a very lucrative day for traders and service providers. A number of artists, flower sellers, growers of flowers, sweet makers, and others rake in more profits on Ganesh Chathurti than on any other day.


Immersion
Home owners and those who install small Ganesh idols on smaller platforms immerse the idols in just one day, but the huge Ganesh idols installed on large public platforms are worshipped for 3 - 4 days and immersed later.
