Mangalore, October 2:  Nalin Kumar Kateel, Member of Parliament and V Ponnuraj, Deputy Commissioner, Dakshina Kannada district, paid homage to  Mahatma Gandhi  statue located in front of Town Hall in the city on Saturday, October 2 on his 141st birth anniversary.

The two paid floral tributes at a statue of Gandhi in front of Town hall. Seemanth Kumar Singh, Mangalore city police commissioner, and other political leaders also paid their respects to the Father of the Nation on the occasion.


A procession was conducted to mark the 141st birth anniversary of Mahathma Gandhi by the representatives of Bharath Sevasdal. The students representing different schools and colleges have participated in the procession from Jyothi Circle to Gandhi Statue located in front of Town Hall in the city today morning.

Speaking on the occasion, V Ponnuraj said that Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi inspired millions to unite for the cause of freedom and independence. Gandhiji was a preacher of truth (Satyagraha) and ’ahimsa’ (non-violence). He started the ’Satyagraha’ movement for the Indian freedom struggle. He proved to the world that freedom can be achieved through the path of non-violence - a true symbol of peace and truth, he said.


Gandhi was remembered by members of the industry as well. Mangalore City Corporation in association with Rotary Club Mangalore Central and Rotaract Club Mangalore City observed “Gandhi Jayanthi” by garlanding his statue at the Lalbagh in front of the MCC building.

Speaking on the occasion, MCC commissioner Vijayaprakash called upon all the people not only to practice the timeless principles of ‘ahimsa’ (non-violence), austerity, tolerance, honesty and peace by which Gandhi lived his life, but also to help propagate these throughout the country.


Rajani Dugganna, Mayor, Mangalore City Corporation and additional deputy commissioner S A Prabhakar Sharma were present on the occasion. Revenue officer Meghana and assistant Praveen co-ordinated the programme. Raghunath Ullal compered the programme.

Daily Pooja for Mahatma Gandhi Statue at Shree Brahma Garadi Temple

One of the unique features of Bahma Garadi Tempel at Kankanady is the daily pujas offered to Mahatma Gandhi statute donated by J.Venkappa. On the occasion of 141st birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, people of Mangalore visited the temple to offer a special Pooja today morning. 

 

Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary is also marked as the International Day of Non-Violence.
