Fully recovered assault victim Rahim Uchil addresses media

Mangalore, June 1, 2012 : Rahim Uchil, president of the Karnataka Byari Sahithya Academy, said that after taking over as the president of the academy on February 5, 2012, a group of eight miscreants assaulted him in the academy office on March 15. He was addressing reporters at a press meet held in his office on June 1, Friday.

Revealing details, he said that two academy employees were present when he was being attacked. One of the miscreants, who wore a white T-shirt, did not say anything but attacked him with a sword. He said that he grabbed the blade with his right hand to protect himself, but the miscreant kept attacking him, owing to which he lost a finger from his right hand. He said that the miscreant broke his left hand too, after which he fell on the floor. When he collapsed another miscreant, who wore a red shirt, hit him on his head. They then fled from the scene.

Stating that he is sure that his attackers were Muslims, Mr. Uchil said that he suspects them to be members of the KFD, who act according to the orders issued by political parties.

He said that, according to his requests, the registrar of the Byari academy took him to Unity Hospital, where Dr. Devadiga, Dr. Dinesh Kadam, and Dr. Kishore replaced his broken hand with a rod and a nerve taken from his leg and gave him new life.

Acknowledging the support of the police department, he said that the police took action immediately and arrested Rafeeq alia Rabbi, one of his attackers. They then launched a manhunt for the other miscreants and directed airports to cancel their passports so that they could not escape. He said that the police have all information about the miscreants, but are taking time to collect the evidence so that they can avoid arresting innocent people.

Although he got discharged from the hospital 10 days back, the police will be protecting him for some more days, he said.

Further, he said that he used to get phone calls from strangers, who expressed their disapproval of his association with the BJP and added that he never thought them capable of attacking him. He also stated that his attackers can never be true Muslims because true Muslims are non violent.

He also said that CM D. V. Sadananda Gowda has promised to sanction funds for the construction of a new Byari Bhavan.

Umarabba, academy registrar, and Bashir, who is related to Rahim, were also present at the press conference.
