Free medical camp help for prison inmates

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Oct 31, 2011 : The Prison Ministry of India (PMI) and AJ Institute of Medical Sciences jointly organized a free medical camp for prison inmates. Around 127 prisoners, including 12 women, benefited from the same.

skin 31The medical camp was organized because the jail inmates, many of whom were suffering from skin ailments, had been demanding such a camp for a long time. Prashanth Shetty, the vice president of AJ Institute of Medical Sciences, provided medication free of cost to the inmates. The team of doctors spent half a day in examining and treating the inmates in the presence of Kavitha, the warden of the jail.

Dr. Narendra J. Shetty told DH that many prisoners were suffering from skin ailments such as scabies, eczema, and fungal infections owing to lack of hygiene and the habit of sharing bed sheets and clothes on the part of the prisoners.

About PMI

PMI is a national voluntary organization, which has been working for the release and rehabilitation of prisoners. Ever since the establishment of its Mangalore unit in 1999, the volunteers have been visiting the district prison near Canara College every Friday, distributing magazines and books among them and providing indoor games such as ludo and carom boards.

The PMI also organizes medical camps for the benefit of prisoners on a regular basis.
