Fourth mainline container vessel calls at Mangalore port, more expected

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, June 13: MV Konard Schulte, a mainline container vessel from Port Cotanou – Benin in West Africa, called at the New Mangalore Port on June 10.

MV KonardThe vessel unloaded 399 TEUs of raw cashew, which will be distributed among various cashew processing units in and around Mangalore, and loaded 500 TEUs of export containers. The vessel will leave on the morning of June 14.

MV Konard Schulte is the fourth mainline container vessel to call at the port this fiscal year, the third being MV CMA CGM Everest, which called on May 22.

When mainline vessels directly call at the port, transit time is saved and so is handling cost. Vessels can easily sail between Mangalore and West Africa in 25 days, but if they sail through Colombo, they will take 40 days. Exporters can easily move their export cargo via mainline vessels since they call at Jubel Ali and Khor – Fakkan ports.

NMPT Chairman P. Tamilvanan requested all MLO’s and other uses to take advantage of these mainline containers and added that the financial year has begun well. He said that 9615 TEUs have already been handled this fiscal year as against the 8,917 TEUs handled during the previous year, which indicates a growth of 7.83 percent.

More mainline vessels are expected to call in at the port soon. The next mainline vessel MV Kalaus J from Port Abdjan of Ivory Coast, West Africa is to call on June 16.
