Forest Officer Vijay Kumar said on the occasion that protecting nature is the primary duty of all citizens, adding that the forest department has taken the initiative of planting saplings in and around the city in collaboration with various schools and the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) because the people of the city are too busy to do so. He said that a number of saplings have already been planted in school premises with the help of the managements of various schools in a bid to curb global warming.

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel inaugurated the event by planting a sapling. He said that trees are being destroyed to set up industries in the city. Although the MCC is concretizing and widening the roads of the city, a number of saplings will be planted on either side of the city to keep it green, he said. He also called upon all people to plant saplings in their surroundings to curb global warming and to ensure clean and pure air in the city.

Mayor Rajani Dugganna, Coastal Development Authority Chairman Nagaraj Shetty, MLA Yogesh Bhat, BJP District President Padmanabha Kottary, Zilla Panchayath President Santhosh Kumar Bhandary, and MCC Commissioner Dr. K. N. Vijayaprakash were also present.
