Flaws in garbage collection system boils MCC meeting

Mangaluru, March 31, 2015 (DHNS): The series of loopholes in the door-to-door garbage collection system which has been introduced in the city from February has become a major issue of concern of members during monthly council meeting of the corporation here on Monday.

Irrespective of party, members alleged that Antony Waste Handling Cell Private Limited has failed in collection and management of waste. In some areas of Surathkal waste is not all being collected and in some areas they collect it once in two days.

The tax of poor has been increased and they have started questioning the corporators, said BJP Corporator Tilakraj.

 

 

Toll-free number
Corporator Aziz and others protested with banners in hands in front of Mayor Jacintha Vijay Alfred. When the health department officials said that the in Surathkal there is scarcity of vehicles for the transportation of wastage, the members enraged and Tilakraj said that the MCC spends Rs 15 crore for the purpose and the company should utilise tax money to solve its problems.

Pacchanady ward Corporator Kavitha said that most of the lorries being used to transport waste are open vehicles. They are just old lorries with new green paint and slogan.

Meanwhile, Sudhir Shetty and Mahabala Marla suggested of giving a toll-free number to public, to complain about the waste management problems.

MCC Commissioner Hephsiba Rani Korlapati said that the corporation is working with special agenda to solve the problem, giving daily and weekly targets to the respective officials.

The company should not manage it from Mumbai. So, the MCC has decided not pay till they come. They should convince us that they are working according to the agreement.

Illegal hoarding
Corporator Sudhir Shetty said that he has counted 36 illegal hoarding just in two main roads of the city, but when MLC Ivan D’Souza raised the same question in the Legislative Council, the officials said that there are only 19 illegal hoarding in the whole city. MCC has not given permission to any hoardings from 1996. The advertisement agencies are cheating the corporation, he said that demanded the Mayor to pass a ruling immediately for the eviction of illegal hoardings.

Revenue Assistant Commissioner clarified that there are 19 illegal hoardings and 175 hoardings in private lands have been legalised after collecting fine.

He assured of evicting the illegal hoardings soon. Former mayor Shashidhar suggested the option of legalising the illegal hoardings or evicting them. But, most of the members including Mahabala Marla opposed legalising them. Opposition Leader Premananda Shetty doubted whether MCC has any advertisement rule or not.

MCC Commissioner has said that a meeting was convened to discuss about the illegal hoardings. The corporation has listed out the illegal hoardings and the place will be given to others. Mayor directed to remove all illegal hoardings.

Water woes
Corporator Sumithra said that people are facing water problem in various problems of the corporation limits. But, the officials say that the amount of water entering into the city itself is less.

Dayananda Shetty also said that water is being supplied in tankers in various parts of Surathkal. Mahabal Marla said that a two MGD (million gallons per day) connection goes to the zilla panchayat. Water is also being supplying to Mulki and Ullal.

As there are many illegal connections, we have to co-op with the available water, he said. An official said that there is no problem is the source, but demand has been increased suddenly because of heat and may bore wells have been dried out. There are some unauthorised connections, he agreed.

Sudhir Shetty expressed concern about the snail pace of Town Hall renovation programme, even after six months. He wanted to know the steps taken by the corporation to speedup the work as many programmes are pending without the availability of the hall. The Commissioner said that a short tender will be called and the work on Town Hall will be finished at the earliest.

Harish M Shetty and many other members expressed concern about the encroachment of gutters by land mafia. It would cause serious problems in monsoon for the general public. The Mayor has promised of spot inspection and solving the problems. Deputy Mayor Purushotham Chthrapura was present among others.
