Fishing boats damaged when a large ship was pushed into sea

Mangalore, Aug 4, 2011: A trawl boat anchored at Kudroli sank and a smaller boat was damaged when a new boat was being launched at Tannirbhavi on Aug 3 Wednesday. This happened when the newly constructed ship was being pushed into the sea with hydraulic jacks

The ship building company wanted to float the ship before doing some more work on it. Although the ship was successfully pushed into the sea, the large ripples created made a number of smaller boats, which were docked because of the fishing holiday, to clash against one another. The ripples were also observed on the banks of the river at Bokkapattana, Kudroli, and other areas. Large quantities of debris and waste were deposited at various placed on the banks of the river because of this operation.

The fishermen, who saw large waves rising from the sea, thought that it was a tsunami. The jetty was damaged and a small boat was split into two, said some fishermen.

The accident led to a financial loss of Rs. 15 lakh. The damaged boat belongs to Parvathi V. Bangera of Kudroli. Reportedly, it contained a lot of diesel to prepare for the fishing season, which is to begin in just a few days.

Fishermen are of the opinion that the company could have warned the fishing community in advance about the operation and prevented this accident. The owner of the boat has decided to approach the district administration if the fishing company, which has already been informed of the loss, fails to pay compensation. In this case, the fishermen are even ready to stage a protest.
