Mangalore, July 16: The Indian Overseas Bank Fifth Mangalore International Open Fide Rated Chess Tournament, organized by the South Kanara District Chess Association (SKDCA), was inaugurated at Radhakrishna Temple Hall on GT Road on July 16, Saturday.

In his introductory address, M. S. Gururaj, the president of SKDCA, said that his association is four-and-a-half years old and has organized a number of competitions for chess enthusiasts. He said that he had handed over the post of president to someone else because he has been elected as the president of the United Karnataka Chess Association. 


He also said that the association is offering a cash prize of Rs. 5,55,555 to the winners because it is five years old. 


Speaking on the occasion, Mangalore Airport Director M. R. Vasudeva said that the SKDCA is doing a great job by organizing chess tournaments in Mangalore, adding that the association has conducted a number of tournaments in the past too. 


Human Rights Commission Chairman Justice Ajaynath Roy said that chess is a game of friendship and that he is happy to see a number of people playing the game. 


Pravin Thipsay, the India’s chess grandmaster, was honoured on this occasion. 


Around 444 players from home as well as abroad participated in this tournament, which will comprise 11 rounds of 2 hours each. The tournament will be conducted according to the latest fide rules. 


M. B. Puranik of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad delivered the welcome address; and Ashwini compered the programme. 


Anil of Indian Overseas Bank, SKDCA Secretary Raghavendra, Nagaland IPS Rajashekar, Karnataka Bank MD P. Jayaram Bhat, and many others were present on the dais.
