Federation Cup: Gujarat’s Maniram Patel is Gold winner in 20 km walk

Mangaluru, May 3, 2015: The Gold medal in men’s 20 km walk at the 19th Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championship underway at Mangala Stadium here, was clinched by Maniram Patel of Gujarat on May 3, Sunday. He clocked 1:29:51.

The second and third places in this category went to Kuldeep of Tata Motors and Ankit Kumar of  Indian Navy.

 

The silver lining however was shot put champion Haryana’s  Inderjeet Singh’s effort to toss the shot put to a distance of 20.65 m and thus  become  the first athlete of the event to qualify for the Rio Olympics. He however could not break the national record in the event.

The credit of creating the first meet record went to Devender Singh of the Indian Army  who won gold (79.65m)  in the javelin throw event. The silver medal went to Neeraj Chopra of Haryana. Both were qualified for the  Asian meet to be held at Wuhan, China next month.

 In the 400 meters hurdles too the first two place winners Durgesh Kumar Pal and M Ramachandran, both from the Army   were qualified for the Asian Meet.
In the 400 meters women’s hurdles, the gold went to  Anu Raghavan of Kerala who too qualified for the Asian meet.

As expected Kerala’s Tintu Luka won gold in women’s 800 meter race (2:04.14), qualifiying for Asian meet but failing to qualify for Rio Olympics.

On May 2, Saturday hosts Karnataka led the tally with 63 points followed by the Army with 46 points and Kerala state with 40 points.
