Mangaluru, July 21, 2018: Scores of farmers related their woes before DK DC  Sasikanth Senthil at a district-level farmers meet here on July 20,  Friday.

Sasikanth Sent...The farmers in the district demanded Karavali package for paddy on the model of Kerala. In addition, special package should be announced for coastal and Malnad districts, wherein areca trees have been affected with fruit-rot disease (Kole roga).

Farmer Dhanakeerthi Balipa said that, in spite of earmarking the land for Raitha Samparka Kendra in Moodbidri, the work has not begun.

“Although the Krishi Yantradhare scheme, to provide farm machineries at low rent has been introduced, the farmers are not provided the required machinery,” he complained.

Farmer Krishnaraj Hegde urged the authorities to accelerate the process of soil testing in the district. There is a need to empower APMC at Baikampady, he added.

Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha district president Ravikiran Punacha said all the loans borrowed by the farmers up to Rs 2 lakh should be waived. “In spite of the government announcing support price for arecanut, no measures have been taken to purchase arecanut on support price. The monkeys and peacocks are engaged in damaging coconuts and vegetables. Hence, a proposal on monkey and peacock park should be submitted to the government to check the menace. The benefit of MGNREGS should be extended to paddy as well. In addition, arecanut should be included in Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana,” he demanded.

Farmer Subrahmanya Bhat said that the authorities have failed to pay compensation for the land submerged for storing the water up to six metres in Thumbe vented dam. “With compensation yet to be paid to people whose land would be submerged with the increased levels of waters, the MCC had promised to pay rent for the land submerged. However, the promised have not been fulfilled. Even there was discrimination in the payment of compensation for the farmers who lost their land at Narikombu, Sajipamunnur, Kallige Fram Panchayats,” he added.

Farmer leader Victor Martis urged the government to setup a Raitha Bhavan in each taluk. The fee for renewal of gun licence should be withdrawn. Fodder unit should be set up in each taluk, he said.

Dam planks  :  Farmers from Adyapadi said that the failure to open the iron planks of the Maravoor vented dam has inundated the farmland in and around Adyapadi. Compensation should be distributed to the farmers for the loss of crops, they demanded.

The DK DC said that tahsildar has already submitted a report on the loss of crops.   Farmer leader Manohar N Shetty urged the district administration to remove the silt from the water body in Harekala-Amblamogaru and rejuvenate Neera unit at Thumbe.

Progressive farmer Prabhakar Mayya said that there is a need to set up a krishi park in the district to guide youth on farming. Further, farmers should be guided on the cultivation of crops based on the weather condition in the district. Scientific price should be fixed for the crops.

Taluk-level meeting  :  The deputy commissioner said that the taluk level farmers meet will be convened shortly to discuss the problems faced by the farmers.

He also promised to bring the issue of fruit rot disease affecting arecanut following continuous rain in the region to the notice of the state government.

Senthil said that due to lack of knowledge, many farmers could not enrol for weather based crop insurance scheme. As the last date for the insurance is already over, the issue will be brought to the notice of the state government to look into the possibility of extending the last date, the DC said.

Further, he said that an RTC printout is made available in gram panchayats. Although all gram panchayats have not started the process, all will be directed to issue RTC copies in the GPs.

DK DC Senthil also informed the meeting that 25 surveyors have been appointed to the district along with 20 village accountants.
