Mangalore June 17: A family traveling in a Maruti Omni narrowly escaped the jaws of death when their vehicle caught fire and turned into a pile of ashes just a few moments after they got out of it. This bizarre incident took place at Padil on June 17, Thursday. 

 

 

 

 

 

A. Khader of Bunkall in Mudigere and his family were traveling to Thumbay. He refilled the car’s gas cylinder in Mangalore. Near Padil, a person called Mohammed Hanif, who was riding a bike behind Khader, informed him that his vehicle was emitting smoke just before overtaking him. 

Khader stopped the car and the family got out. Immediately, the vehicle caught fire. The Pandeshwar fire service rushed to the scene immediately. 

Service Advisor of Mandovi J. Kishan said that the car’s gas tank can hold 47 litres of fuel. Since the car was a company product, it has a safety valve, which prevented a blast, he said. He also said that Khader must lodge a complaint at the police station and submit the necessary documents. Within two days, the insurance company will conduct an inspection and release the money. He said that the causes of the accident will be revealed only after investigation. 

Station Officer of Pandeshwar Fire Service Vasanth Kumar said that the fire was caused by a leaking valve pipe. If the gas cylinder had exploded, it would have affected the entire area within a radius of 10mts from the car, he informed. 

The Kankandy police and the chief fire officer of Pandeshwar visited the spot. A large crowd of people gathered at the spot as a result of which there was a traffic jam.
