Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Jul 30: Ashwin Kumar (26), who practiced law in Mangalore, died soon after drinking a potion made from the bark of a tree on Aati Amavasya on July 30 Saturday.

The people of Mangalore follow an age-old tradition of drinking a potion made of a tree called Devil’s tree, known among the local people as haale mara or paale mara. Unfortunately, Ashwin’s family prepared the potion from the bark of the wrong tree, owing to which the entire family fell ill and Ashwin Kumar breathed his last.

Ashwin and his brother Brijesh had taken the bark from the wrong tree and their mother Dakshayini did not notice it. Since Dakshayini already had health problems, she fell ill first. Ashwin and Brijesh rushed her to the hospital, but Ashwin fell ill on the way. Even their servant Kashaiah had to be admitted to the hospital.

The family resides in Kelinja in Vittal. Dakshayini is the widow of late Damodar Poojary, a tahsildar. She has 2 sons and 3 daughters.

Ashwin died in the evening, but his mother, brother, and servant are out of danger and recovering.
