Exploitation of Dalits has reduced significantly : SC/ST Commission member Shivanna

Mangalore, Aug 23, 2013 :  The Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes People of Karnataka are better off when compared to  SC ST people in other states, said M Shivanna, Member of the National Commission of SC/STs.

Speaking to reporters after participating in a progress review meet held at the DC office on August 23, Friday, he said  various amenities are being provided for the SC/ ST people in Karnataka. Referring to the SC /STs in DK district, he said their standard of living has improved by 90 per cent. Even the cases of  exploitation of Dalits have reduced significantly in the district where the literacy rates among Dalits is also high, he said.

 

 

Shivanna said he was undertaking a statewide tour to have a first hand information on the condition of the Dalits. “ I have visited the  hostels and the local prison, he said. Continuing, Shivanna informed that a total of 37 cases of caste abuse had been filed in 2011, 56 in 2012, and 41 so far in 2013.

 N Prakash, Deputy Commissioner, Dharmaiah, DCP and P Jayanthi, Director of SC ST Department were also present.
