Encouraging a dwindling tradition to soar sky high

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, Oct 21, 2019: Goodu Deepa (sky light) competition, being hosted by Namma Kudla TV channel since two decades, is back in the city for the Deepavali festival. It will be held on the Gokarananatha Temple premises in Kudroli on Saturday.

Namma Kudla director Harish B. Karkera told reporters here that the organisers felt the need to host the competition to encourage the dwindling tradition of making and using Goodu Deepas in houses which once was widely practised in coastal Karnataka. While gold medal was being presented to the winning work from the first year itself, recently the organisers started presenting gold medals to the first two winners in three categories of the contest.

The competition would be held under three categories — traditional, modern and special model (miniature replica). The third prize winner would get a silver medal in each category, while there would be more than one hundred prizes for the entries. The contest would start at 4 p.m.

Mr. Karkera lauded the Gokarnanatha Temple management and its patron B. Janardhana Poojary for allowing the competition to be held on the sprawling premises of the temple.
Awards

Meanwhile, Namma Kudla would felicitate personalities born in Tulu Nadu who have contributed immensely to various fields of social life during the occasion. A special award in the name of Namma Kudla founder, late B.P. Karkera, would be presented to an organisation working for society.

While Karnataka Bank Managing Director and CEO M.S. Mahabaleshwara would be presented the Namma Kudla award, Lakumi troupe head and Dakshina Kannada District Theatre Artists Federation President Kishore D. Shetty would be given the Namma Tuluver award, Army personnel N. Ashok from Puttur would be presented the Namma Kudla Sadhaka award and sports writer Jagadishchandra Sooterpet and sportsman Rithwik Alevooraya would be presented the Namma Kudla Sadhana award. The B.P. Karkera Award would be given to Boloor Mogaveera Mahasabha, Mr. Karkera said.
