Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, June 10: The embankment at the end of the bridge constructed over River Nethravathi at Ullal collapsed in the early morning of June 10 Friday, leading to traffic block for several hours.

Reportedly, the approach road embankment joining the bridge collapsed due to dredging work carried out as part of the construction work of the new Bridge being developed parallel to the existing bridge.

The collapsed embankment was on the left of the Mangalore to Thokkotu stretch of the highway. Reportedly, the Hyderabad-based construction company Navyug was renovating the bridge when the embankment collapsed. The workers had just completed one part of the embankment when the other part collapsed.

Contract officials were present at the venue, but refused to make any comments. Later SI Manjunath Shetty and others arrived at the spot.

The line of vehicles on either side of the national highway stretched to at least 2kms. Heavy vehicles were not permitted entry as the pack of cement supporting the bridge can be life threatening for motorists.

The traffic police diverted vehicles at Thokkottu and Pumpwell to prevent further traffic block.
Currently, the embankment is being repaired. Since one part of the bridge is quite strong, vehicles are permitted to move along it.
