Elephant, leopards found dead in Karkala

Karkala, Dec 22, 2017: Two leopards and an elephant were found dead near human habitations in Karkala, Udupi district. The leopards are believed to have died of starvation, the elephant died due to asphyxiation and trauma.

A video of a dying leopard, two to three months old, has gone viral. The leopard apparently suffered giddiness because of starvation and it was found dead near a field in Bailooru.

"An autopsy revealed grass in the leopard’s stomach and no food as such." he said. However, he said, there could be other reasons for the collapse. The officer said the cub may have been accidentally separated from its mother.

The other leopard, aged around a year, according to the RFO, also died due to starvation. Its carcass was found on government land in Erlappadi.


Elephant dies  : The strong and healthy male elephant, around five years, died after it fell into a 3-4ft deep pit, with its trunk pressed against the inner wall of the pit. The incident took place at a field in Neere. The pit had been dug for agricultural purposes.


The elephant went into trauma as it became immovable and it either suffered a heart attack or died because of asphyxiation. The Karkala RFO said elephants straying into human habitation is a common phenomenon in this part of the district.
