Electrification of the Konkan route to take off - New rail Ministers direction

Mangaluru, Nov 24, 2014:  Suresh Prabhu, union minister of railways on his first visit,  after taking charge of the Railway Ministry reviewed working of Konkan Railway at Mumbai. Chairman and managing director of Konkan Railway Bhanu Prakash Tayal had a detailed meeting with the minister and all aspects of the working of Konkan Railway were discussed.

Suresh Prabhu instructed the  Konkan Railway authorities to chart a long term development plan and submit it to the ministry. For immediate measures he directed Konkan Railway to improve availability of passenger amenities at its stations. The minister assured the KRCL officials that the ministry will sanction proposal for electrification soon.

Besides the electrification of the route, the Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd. also proposed to the Ministry for doubling the track to enhance its carrying capacity. It represented to Ministry to include the Mangaluru area from Ullal onward and comprising Mangalore Central, Mangalore Junction and New Mangalore Port Trust, in its jurisdiction as originally envisaged in the detailed project report for the formation of the corporation.

With the recent accidents on Konkan Railway safety has been a matter of concern which the minister reviewed. Tayal also outlined an action plan which has already been put into action to prevent accidents in future, a KRCL communique here stated. With Suresh Prabhu taking keen interest in working of Konkan Railway, it is set for better days felt people generally..
