Mangalore, Aug 11, 2011: Ashraf, the former mayor of Mangalore, has responded to various media reports about his son allegedly getting a girl addicting to drugs and luring her to Mumbai by presenting his side of the story. On Aug 10 Wednesday, Ashraf met Seemanth Kumar Singh, the police commissioner of Mangalore, to clarify the issue.

Arjun, the father of the girl, had lodged a complaint accusing Araf, son of Ashraf, of getting his daughter involved in drugs and planning to take her to Mumbai. Ashraf, however, informed the police commissioner that his son is innocent and is currently studying in Mumbai. He also urged the police commissioner to investigate the matter thoroughly, stating that he is willing to cooperate with any inquiry against his son if he was found guilty.

Ashraf also said that the girl was friendly with Araf a few years back and had refused to back out from the relationship. Her father had even accused Araf of attempting to convert her to Islam. Ashraf then sent his son to Mumbai and an agreement was signed in the police station between the two families that the girl and the boy would not meet again.

A month back, the girl’s father, accompanied by some Bajrang Dal workers, barged into Ashraf’s house and demanded to know his son’s contact details. They accused Araf of attempting to lure the girl to Mumbai. However, Ashraf said that the girl’s mother had called Araf and had revealed that the girl had decided to go to Mumbai without telling her father, adding that she had even suggested marriage, but Araf had turned down the proposal. Ashraf said that he had recorded the conversation and provided it to the police as proof of Araf’s innocence.

Earlier, Ashraf had accused some of his party men of attempting to tarnish his reputation, but had later taken back his statements.

Ashraf was accompanied by Ivan D’Souza, Suresh Ballal, and others.
