Stating that feeble laws cannot deal with corruption and pointing out several loopholes within them, she said that the stringent provisions of the Lokpal Bill should be implemented to address the problem of corruption. She also said that a number of citizens, concerned with the level of corruption within the Indian government, have united at a website called www.indiaagainstcorruption.org to demand a set of tough laws to deal with corruption.

Voicing her opinions about democracy, she said that democracy does not mean merely exercising one’s right to vote once in five years, but also exercising the right to protest against injustice within the government. She also launched a brand new movement called Mangaloreans Against Corruption (MAC) and urged students to become aware of their rights in this democratic country.

Tallam Venkatesh, the former president of the Federation of Karnataka State Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and K. Laxminarayana, the group general manager of ONGC-MRPL, also spoke on the occasion.

Dr. Kripa Amar Alva, the chairperson of B. Amar Alva Trust, delivered the welcome address; and Principal Swetha Pai proposed the vote of thanks.
