Delhi, April 8: Dr. B M Hegde, the former vice chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education has been presented with Padma Bhushan for his meritorious services in the field of medicine and education.

President Pratibha Patil on Wednesday presented Padma awards to an array of artistes, music composers, and sportsman and film actors.

The heartthrob of yesteryear Rekha and rather young Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan received Padma Sri for their contribution to the Indian cinema. Rekha acted in 180 films in a career of over 40 years as against Saif Ali’s two decade career.

Ilaiyaraja, the celebrated music composer of over 900 Indian films, was conferred the Padma Bhushan award for his contribution to art in India and abroad.

Oscar winning sound designer Resul Pookutty was presented the Padma Shri award for his contribution to sound mixing in the Indian film industry and abroad.

Olympian boxer Vijender Singh was conferred the Padma Shri award for his contribution to the field of sports.

And motor racing driver Narain Karthikeyan too received the Padma Shri. Karthikeyan has been an active formula one racer and shot to prominence in a short period of 5 years.

And, famous cricket coach Ramakant Achrekar was another Padma Shri winner for his immense contribution to cricket. The septuagenarian’s most famous and successful pupil is Sachin Tendulkar.

Brushing aside controversies surrounding his nomination, the US-based hotelier Sant Chatwal also received Padma Bhusan award, saying he was happy to contribute to establishing friendship between India and the US. He attributed controversy to the media hype.

Other Padma Bhushan awardees were: nuclear scientist Bikash Sinha, historian Bipin Chandra, kathak exponent Kumudini Lakhia, panchavadya exponent Kuzhur Narayana Marar, versatile artiste Mallika Sarabhai, banker N Vaghul, eye specialist Noshir Minoo Shroff, music composer Shrinivas Khale, sarangi player Ustad Sultan Khan and Ayurveda practitioner E T Narayanan Mooss.

BELLE  MONAPPA   HEGDE (B M Hegde) the former vice chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (now Manipal University) has been chosen for Padma Bhushan for his meritorious services in the field of medicine and education.Dr. Hegde was born on August 18, 1938, in Pangala near Udupi. A Gold Medalist in MBBS from Madras University, Dr. B.M. Hegde  did his MD in King George’s Medical College, University of Lucknow. An internationally acclaimed cardiologist and medical educator, he traveled to almost all the countries in the world as visiting professor, examiner, distinguished doctor and academician. He has guided a number of students from many universities for their doctoral thesis, including Ph.D. He has published more than 30 books and innumerable articles, both in English and Kannada. His research papers have appeared in English periodicals published from UK, USA, Germany, India,China and Kuwait and have duly highlightied various aspects of health - both for the benefit common people and experts.He has received awards and honors from all over the globe for his refutative research. Dr B C Roy National Award  for the year 1999 in the category of “Eminent Medical  Teacher", Jagdish Chander Bose Award in Life Sciences for the year 1999 and Karnataka Rajyothsava Award in 1997 are some of the accolades he received.
