Dowry deaths increase despite Dowry Prohibition Act – Zainaba

Mangalore, May 21, 2012: A. S. Zainaba, vice president of National Women’s Front (NWF), said at a women’s convention held in Town Hall on May 21, Monday that dowry deaths and female feticide were on the rise in spite of the Dowry Prohibition Act of 1961. 


Criticizing men who considered dowry as “easy money,” she said that most men do not care about the plight of the bride and her parents. Stating that dowry is merciless, she said that modern men and women should work against such inhuman practices. She also spoke of how important it is to create awareness among youth on the evils of dowry.

The inaugural ceremony of the anti-dowry women’s convention was followed by a panel discussion on women, dowry, and empowerment. Members of the panel urged the audience to boycott marriages involving dowry. Problems of Muslim women were also discussed on this occasion.


Mehtab, a lecturer, said that several Muslim girls discontinue their studies after primary education. 


Fatima Naseema, general secretary of NWF, said that the resources of women were not fully utilized, adding that women’s empowerment can lead to empowerment of the country. 


Dildar Bhatkal, national secretary; Shahida Aslam, state president; Khairunnisa Sayyed, convener of Aasare Women’s Foundation; Sameena Malar, district president; and many others were also present.
