Mangaluru, Nov 7, 2015: Karnataka department of prisons has officially suspended five Mangaluru prison personnel, including the superintendent for dereliction of duty. Hassan district prison superintendent Krishnamurthy and jailor Raghupathy took charge of the Mangaluru District Prison on Nov 6.
Sources in the department said Mangaluru prison superintendent Obaleshappa, head warder Naavi, warders Talwar SS, A Kolara and Mulki Patil were placed under suspension pending inquiry for dereliction of duty. The inquiry had prima facie found that negligence on part of these five persons had led to the situation in the prison which left two dead and more than 12 injured.
The department had transferred 16 notorious undertrials from the district jail here a couple of days back to five different central prisons as part of crackdown of following the murder of two undertrials - aides of Chhota Shakeel.
The investigations into the murder case, the police are still baffled about how it took place, how weapons reached inside and where they were kept. The district jail has 27 personnel including nine on deputation to handle a strength of 400-odd prisoners mostly undertrials.
The district jail was rocked by twin murders in what the city police called a case of inter-gang rivalry. Five henchmen of Akashbhavan Sharan, associate of fugitive Vikki Shetty, lodged in the jail as undertrials, set themselves on Madoor Isubu, 41, and his friend Ganesh Shetty, 40 with sharp edged weapons when the duo were outside their block, fatally assaulting them. Isubu and Ganesh are associates of Chota Shakeel.
