Mangaluru, June 24, 2018: International Widows’ Day was celebrated at Shree Gokarnanatheshwara Temple Kudroli on June 23, Saturday.
Addressing the gathering, Manorama Bhat, Member of Karavali Lekhakiyara Vachakiyara Sangha said women enjoy much respect in the society while also being the ones who have to shoulder a great deal of responsibility. A woman who lost her husband should never be called a widow by the society, she said adding they should also not remove the Mangalasutra. "I have lost my husband but still I wear Kumkum on my forehead. The society must never look down upon widows," she added.
District Sessions Judge Mallanagowda who spoke as a chief guest said the condition of widows was far better now than in the past. The Supreme Court has formed district level committee for the welfare of widows and there are several NGOs which too are working for the cause of widows, he added.
Programme convenor Harini and Kudroli Temple Renovation Committee Member Dr Anasuya were present.
Social workers Kairunnisa, Suhasini, writer Manorama Bhat and housewife Anitha were honoured on the occasion.
