District-level seminar on AIDS/HIV organized

Mangalore, Sep 7, 2011 :The Centre for Advocacy and Research organized a district-level seminar on HIV/AIDS for media representatives at RAPCC today.

Dr. K. N. Vijayaprakash, the CEO of the Zilla Panchayat, inaugurated the event and said that society should change its attitude toward HIV positive people.

Stating that the problems of sex workers and HIV positive individuals should not be discussed at seminars alone, he said that serious efforts should also be made to re-introduce these people into the mainstream and to create awareness among them. He spoke of the importance of organizing movements to protect HIV positive people.

Prabhananda Hegde, the CFAR of Bangalore, delivered the introductory address.

Dr. O. R. Srirangappa, the district health officer; Dr. Kishore, the programme officer; and Dr. Soumya, the medical officer of ART Centre Mangalore, presided over the inaugural event.

Dr. Kishore, the programme officer of the District Aids Awareness Unit, spoke on the topic State and District Level Response in Controlling HIV, during the first session. He said that HIV infected people face a lot of problems in society and urged the media to focus on their problems.

Speaking on the occasion, Nandish of the Karnataka Sexual Minorities, said that organizations conduct prevention programmes and medical tests, but hardly interact with them and never rehabilitate them. Even if rehabilitation is offered, the victims are not willing to cooperate, he added.
