District administration takes steps to eradicate child labour

Mangalore, July 26: Deputy Commissioner Dr. N. S. Channappa Gowda directed flat owners’ associations to inform either the district administration or the assistant commissioner of the department of labour if they come across cases where children below 14 years were employed as domestic servants. He was speaking at a meeting held to review implementation of action plans for the eradication of child labour held in his office today.

Further speaking on this issue, he said that flat owners are usually guilty of employing children as domestic servants although they know that employing children is against the law. He also said that 30 child labourers were rescued in the district after conducting 16,424 inspections from 2007 – 08 to 2010 – 11. Stating that these children have been rehabilitated, he said that Rs. 2,25,000 has been collected from the offenders and deposited in the child rehabilitation fund. 


Speaking on the occasion, Venkatesh Shindihatti, the assistant commissioner of the department of labour, said that 3 child labourers rescued from a fishing port at Bunder, were admitted to schools. 


When he said that only 913 schools have submitted declaration certificates signed by parents, stating that they will not employ children in schools and shops, despite the fact that the department had directed all aided and government schools to do so, the DC directed all schools to submit these certificates at the earliest possible. 


Dr. Harish Kumar, the Puttur sub divisional officer; Nagesh, the labour officer; and others were also present.
