Mangaluru Aug 20, 2016: The District Congress Committee observed the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister late Rajiv Gandhi and former Chief Minister of Karnataka Late Devraj Urs at the Congress office here on August 20, Saturday. Minister for Forest, Ecology and Environment B Ramanath Rai garlanded the portraits of the two leaders and paid his respects.
Speaking on the occasion, Ramanath Rai said that Rajiv Gandhi and D Devraj Urs have contributed immensely to the development of the nation and were instrumental in providing a clean administration . Devaraj Urs also played a crucial rule in effective implementation of Panchayath Raj system, he said and added that the late leader had maintained a close bonding with the people.
He also said that, zamindar system has been erased because of Devraj Urs as before farmers were treated as bonded labourers, his land reforms which led in erasing the zamindar system. Sanghaparivar can be called as Chaddi Parivaar who divert the minds of youths to involve in anti-social activities, he added.
Karnataka Legislative Council Chief Whip Ivan D’Souza said that the contribution of Devraj Urs for the upliftment of the deprived sections needs to be remembered. At present Sangha Parivar and BJP spilled venom on these deprived sections, he alleged and condemned the recent incident wherein Praveen Poojary was hacked to death by cow vigilantes.
Former mayor Shashidhar Hegde, Media Convenor TK Sudhir, Shashi Kumar Shetty, Subodh Alva, Ashraf and others were present.
