Mangalore , Sep 5 2011 : The Sullia court has ordered a defaulter to pay double the sum he owes and has also sentenced him to a year in prison plus Rs. 10,000 fine. If the accused does not pay the fine, he will have to spend 3 more months in jail.

 

jail1The borrower is K. Chandrashekar Bhat, the son of Thippanakaje Sadashiv Bhat of Kalmadka and the proprietor of Prakhar Telefilms. He had borrowed Rs. 1,05,000 from his employee Shriram Bhat of Negalagundi at Pambethadi in Sullia in 2006.

Since the firm was running under loss, Chandrashekar had not even paid Shriram Bhat’s salary, amounting to around Rs. 55,000 for the work he did in 2006 – 07. He issued a cheque for Rs. 1,60,000 on

June 20, 2007. However, the cheque was dishonored because of insufficient funds in Chandrashekar Bhat’s account. Shriram Bhat filed a case against Chandrashekar on Aug 31, 2007 after issuing a legal notice.

Judge C. K. Basavaraj of the Sullia Civil Court heard the case and delivered the final verdict.  Champa V. Gowda and M. Venkappa Gowda were the lawyers who argued the case on behalf of Shriram Bhat.
